The recent geopolitical instability in the Straits of Hormuz serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of global supply chains. As maritime disruptions threaten oil supplies, the cascading effects on energy-dependent fertiliser production and food transport logistics make local food security a matter of necessity rather than choice. Link this with climate change and the future uncertain.

1. Global Context and Local Necessity

In response, the Sid Valley has a unique opportunity to adopt an Edible Valley Initiative, transforming the local landscape into a productive, resilient, and community-focused ecosystem.

Modern food systems are heavily reliant on “just-in-time” delivery and fossil-fuel-intensive inputs.

  • Food Security: With unpredictable climate events and precarious water supplies, decentralising food production partially mitigates the risk of external shocks.
  • Sustainability: Every kilogram of food grown within the valley reduces “food miles,” lowers carbon emissions from transport, and decreases reliance on synthetic fertilisers.
  • Love Sidmouth: when we care for the local environment the quality of life improves for numerous associated reasons. Why depend solely on international politics when the people of the Sid Valley can ensure there is food on their tables?

2. Precedents: The “Incredible Edible” Model

The proposed initiative draws inspiration from successful schemes like Incredible Edible Todmorden in West Yorkshire. Founded in 2008, Todmorden transformed public plots, police station gardens, and railway platforms into vegetable patches open to all.

  • Economic Impact: Research indicates that such schemes increase “local leakage” prevention—keeping money within the local economy by supporting local growers and businesses. Todmorden saw an increase in tourism as well, something that Sidmouth knows a lot about and would benefit from.
  • Social Cohesion: European models, such as the Essbare Stadt (Edible City) in Andernach, Germany, demonstrate that public edible landscapes foster community pride and reduce vandalism through collective ownership.
  • Biodiversity: By growing more food in local open spaces we aim to increase their biodiversity. Especially when the food plants grown are pollinator friendly

3. Implementing the “Edible Valley” Framework

The Sid Valley can integrate more food production into its existing infrastructure without compromising its aesthetic or environmental integrity.

Integration with Local Organisations

  • Sidmouth Arboretum: The arboretum currently plant or supply various edible trees and shrubs locally. Indeed both our orchard area and hazel hedge at the food forest originated with the Arboretum. Incorporating a modest percentage (e.g., 5–10%) of fruit-bearing species into hedges and woodlands—such as crab apple, damson, or hazel—supports both biodiversity and foraging.
  • Friends of the Byes: the existing orchard already contributes. It could also grow a mix of plants in “guilds” around and through the present infrastructure. 
  • Sidmouth Community Food Forest: Examples of what can be grown and the increased use of this unique area is evidence of how food production can sit alongside an amenity area that is used by children, families and older people for a host of reasons. 
  • Sidmouth in Bloom: SiB already plant some edibles in their beds around Sidmouth so this project is effectively an extension of what they already do. By introducing “edimentals” (ornamental yet edible plants), floral displays can remain visually striking while potentially providing yields of kale, sea kale, Swiss chard, globe artichokes, Mediterranean herbs etc.
  • Etc.

Urban Adaptation and Vertical Growing

Where narrow pavements prohibit traditional tree planting, the initiative can look upward and inward:

  • Vertical Viticulture: Training hardy grapes, loganberries, or hops up south-facing walls with minimal wire supports utilises vertical space without obstructing pedestrian flow.
  • Verge Planters: Strategic placement of planters on estate verges can host robust crops—such as rosemary or lavender—which are resistant to roadside pollution.

Domestic Contributions: From Box to Berries

Individuals can contribute by replacing high-maintenance or pest-prone features, such as Box Moth blighted box hedging, with “step-over” fruit trees or currant bushes. This replaces a monoculture hedge with a functional, edible boundary.

4. Holistic Benefits: Health and Wellbeing

The benefits of an Edible Valley extend beyond the larder:

  • Physical & Mental Health: Engaging with local “food forests” and community gardens is a proven “green prescription” for reducing anxiety and improving physical fitness.
  • Climate Resilience: Plants in towns reduce the temperature extremes. They also slow the flow of water through the natural environment resulting in flood mitigation. system. 
  • Sense of Place: Local varieties of fruit and veg create a unique regional identity, reconnecting residents with the seasonal rhythms of the Devon landscape.

5. Individual Agency: From Waste to Intensive Yields

A critical pillar of an Edible Valley Initiative will be the management of organic matter and the intensification of household output. Resilience is built not only by what we grow but by how we close the nutrient loop.

Closing the Loop: Composting and Waste

According to EDDC waste statistics, the region consistently ranks as one of the highest performing in England for recycling. In the 2022/23 period, East Devon achieved a recycling rate of approximately 60%, with food waste collections accounting for several thousand tonnes of organic matter diverted from landfill annually.

However, transporting food waste to central processing facilities still incurs a carbon cost. By composting at home, individuals can:

  • Retain Nutrients: Convert household scraps into “black gold,” reducing the need for oil-dependent synthetic fertilisers.
  • Soil Health: Improve the water-retention capacity of local soil, a vital defence against the increasingly unpredictable rainfall and drought patterns noted in the Sid Valley.

Maximising Productivity: Biointensive and Season Extension

Present outputs from gardens and allotments can be significantly increased by shifting from traditional seasonal cropping to biointensive methods.

  • The Power of One Square Metre: Research into intensive urban agriculture suggests that even a single square metre of managed land, if used biointensively, can produce between 20kg and 50kg of fresh produce per year.
  • Biointensive Techniques: By focusing on soil preparation, close spacing, and “intercropping” (growing fast-maturing crops like lettuce between slower ones like brassicas), local gardener can triple the yield of a standard plot.
  • Season Extension: The use of cold frames, cloches, and “edible climbers” on south-facing walls can extend the Devon growing season by up to two months, ensuring food availability during the “hungry gap” of early spring.

The “Social Square Metre” for Flat Dwellers

For residents in the Sid Valley without private gardens, the opportunity to manage just one square metre of public land for vegetable production would be transformative.

  • Scaling Impact: If 1,000 residents without gardens were allocated a single square metre in public “adopt-a-spot” schemes, the valley could theoretically produce an additional 20,000kg to 50,000kg of food annually.
  • Social Connectivity: This model, similar to the “street-side planters” in the Incredible Edible model, turns “dead space” into a productive asset, providing fresh nutrients to those with the least access to land while simultaneously reducing the demand for commercially transported greens.

6. Conclusion

The Edible Valley Initiative is a pragmatic response to an uncertain global future.

By leveraging the expertise of local groups—from bitesizedgardening.co.uk and Sidmouth Arboretum to the various “Friends of” groups and Sidmouth in Bloom —the valley can transition from a consumer of global commodities to a producer of local sustenance.

This is not about total self-sufficiency, but about building resilience through integration.

Why the Edible Valley Could Fail!

The ‘Edible Valley’ initiative by the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group proposes a transformation of public and private spaces into “edible landscapes” to enhance local food resilience and biodiversity. While the blueprint is rooted in ecological sustainability, sceptics often raise several logical and practical objections and I address those below.

But before I address each individually there is something worth noting. The Edible Valley may be a new idea for the Sid Valley, but it isn’t a totally new concept. For example the market town of Todmorden started on their edible town initiative 14 years ago. They have heard and seen most of the arguments that can be thrown at the idea. And each and every one of them has been addressed.

At the end of this post I have added a TED YouTube video. It features Pam Warhurst’s talk entitled “How we can eat our landscapes”. It is an eyeopener. Pam was the architect of the Todmorden project and her talk produces more agreement than arguments against. Watch it before deciding if you are for or against the Edible valley idea or pose reasons why it will not work in the Sid Valley.

Pam has convinced me that all the arguments against such a project are merely minor hurdles and that the need to proceed has never been stronger.

1. The “Scale and Efficiency” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “Community gardens and ‘edible verges’ are a drop in the ocean. They cannot possibly replace industrial agriculture or provide enough calories to sustain a population of 15,000 in the Sid Valley. It is an inefficient use of land that creates a false sense of security.”

Response: The initiative is not designed to replace national food supply chains but to provide a supplementary safety net and a “blueprint for resilience.” In a crisis, even a 5-10% increase in local fresh produce can significantly alleviate pressure on vulnerable households. Furthermore, it focuses on “nutrient density” rather than “calorie volume”—growing high-vitamin fruits and vegetables that are often the first to become expensive or unavailable during supply chain disruptions.

2. The “Public Nuisance and Maintenance” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “Unintended consequences include rotting fruit on pavements, which attracts wasps and vermin. Public edible spaces often fall into disrepair once the initial ‘volunteer enthusiasm’ wanes, leaving the local council with a messy, expensive clearing-up job.”

Response: Successful edible landscapes, like the “Incredible Edible” model, utilise stewardship agreements where specific community groups take legal and practical responsibility for maintenance. By selecting perennial crops (fruit trees, nut bushes, and herbs) rather than high-maintenance annuals, the labour requirement is significantly reduced. Proper design—such as planting away from high-traffic footpaths—can mitigate issues with fallen fruit.

3. The “Food Safety and Pollution” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “Food grown on roadside verges or in urban soil is contaminated with heavy metals from car exhausts, microplastics, and dog fouling. It is irresponsible to encourage the public to eat ‘wild’ food that hasn’t met commercial health and safety standards.”

Response: Research into urban agriculture shows that the risk of contamination is often overstated and can be managed through soil testing and raised beds. For roadside verges, selecting crops with protective skins (like fruit trees or nut bushes) rather than leafy greens (which absorb more airborne pollutants) minimises risk. Public education on “wash before you eat” is a standard and effective component of these schemes.

4. The “Economic Opportunity Cost” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “Land in the Sid Valley is at a premium. Using public or private space for ‘free’ food undermines local commercial growers and diverts funds or land that could be used for housing or more ‘productive’ infrastructure.”

Response: Most of the land identified in the blueprint (verges, school grounds, and “dead spaces”) is not suitable for housing or commercial farming. Far from undermining local growers, the initiative fosters a “food culture” that increases overall demand for high-quality, local produce. It acts as an “incubator,” teaching residents the value of local food, which often leads to increased support for nearby professional farmers and farm shops.

5. The “Vandalism and Theft” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “The ‘Tragedy of the Commons’ applies here. A few people will harvest everything before it is ripe or destroy the plants, leaving nothing for the rest of the community. Without fences and security, the project is doomed to fail.”

Response: Experience from similar UK projects suggests the opposite: “the more you grow, the less people steal.” When food is abundant and clearly designated as “for everyone,” the psychology of scarcity is replaced by community pride. Vandalism tends to decrease in “edible” areas because the space feels cared for and utilised, increasing “natural surveillance” by residents.

6. The “Biodiversity Conflict” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “Agriculture, even ‘edible landscaping,’ is a human intervention that can displace native wild species. Introducing non-native fruit trees might benefit humans but could disrupt the delicate local ecosystem the Biodiversity Group is supposed to protect.”

Response: The blueprint specifically advocates for agroforestry and permaculture principles, which mimic natural ecosystems. By choosing “multi-functional” plants—such as crab apples or hazel—the initiative provides food for humans while simultaneously offering blossom for pollinators and nesting sites for birds. It turns “biological deserts” (mown grass verges) into complex, tiered habitats that support significantly higher biodiversity than the status quo.

7. The “Health and Safety Liability” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “This is a legal minefield. If a member of the public trips on a raised bed, cuts themselves on a garden tool, or has an allergic reaction to a plant, who is liable? The Council? The Biodiversity Group? The threat of litigation makes this a bureaucratic nightmare.”

Response: This is a solved problem within UK civil law. Most community initiatives operate under the Occupiers’ Liability Act, which requires a “common duty of care” that is easily managed through standard risk assessments and Public Liability Insurance (often costing as little as £100–£200 a year for small groups). By formalising the initiative through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the local authority, responsibilities are clearly defined, transforming “liability” into a managed and routine administrative task.

8. The “Aesthetic and Property Value” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “Permaculture and ‘edible forests’ often look messy, overgrown, and unkempt. This ‘wild’ look can lower property values in desirable areas like the Sid Valley and makes the town look like it’s being neglected by the council.”

Response: Resilience does not have to be “messy.” The initiative utilizes “cues to care”—design techniques such as defined timber edges, mown border strips, and clear signage that signal the area is intentional and maintained. Furthermore, modern property trends show a growing premium for “sustainable” and “green” neighborhoods. High-quality edible landscaping, like fruit-tree avenues, can actually enhance the “English Garden” aesthetic of a valley, potentially increasing rather than decreasing local appeal.

9. The “Exclusivity and Demographics” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “These projects are usually driven by retired, middle-class enthusiasts with plenty of time. They don’t actually reach the people who suffer most from food poverty, making it a ‘vanity project’ for the wealthy rather than a serious social intervention.”

Response: While the drivers may have more time, the output is a public good accessible to all. The blueprint specifically targets communal areas like school grounds and social housing verges to ensure the food is physically located where it is needed most. By removing the “price” and “transport” barriers to fresh produce, the initiative provides a direct, dignified supplement to the diet of lower-income residents that traditional “top-down” charity often misses.

10. The “Fragility of Volunteerism” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “The project relies entirely on the ‘goodwill’ of a few volunteers. If the core group moves away or loses interest, the ‘Edible Valley’ will become a valley of weeds and dead trees within two seasons. It is not a sustainable long-term strategy.”

Response: The initiative focuses on perennial systems (fruit trees, berry bushes, herbs) specifically to avoid the fragility of annual gardening. Once established, an orchard or nut grove requires minimal intervention compared to a vegetable patch. Furthermore, by embedding the “Edible Valley” into the curriculum of local schools and the operations of the town council, the project moves from being a “hobby” to being part of the town’s permanent green infrastructure, ensuring continuity across generations.

11. The “Tokenism” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “Suggesting we can solve ‘resilience’ with a few community orchards is a dangerous distraction. It lets the government and big supermarkets off the hook for the real, systemic failures in our national food security.”

Response: Local resilience and national policy are not a zero-sum game; they are complementary. Community-led initiatives act as “proof of concept” that can influence national policy (such as the UK Government’s Food Strategy). Rather than being a distraction, these projects educate the public on the fragility of supply chains, creating a more politically engaged citizenry that is more likely to demand systemic change at the national level.

12. The “Genetic Integrity” Argument

Sceptic’s View: “By planting ‘edible’ varieties, you risk cross-pollination with truly wild species, potentially diluting the genetic pool of the Sid Valley’s native flora. You are prioritising human ‘snacks’ over pure conservation.”

Response: The Sid Valley is already a “managed” landscape with centuries of agricultural history. The blueprint prioritises heritage and local varieties—such as Devon cider apples—which are themselves part of the region’s cultural and biological history. Integrating these into the landscape preserves rare genetic lines that might otherwise be lost to industrial monocultures, actually serving the goals of conservation rather than hindering them.
