The National Trust in Somerset transformed a river by filling its channel, allowing nature to reclaim the landscape, resulting in increased biodiversity and flood resilience.
This article is about. marvellous river experiment that I believe needs repeating hundreds of times.
I was brought up in the Culm valley. Each winter the valley flooded and farmland was inundated. This is the way it had been for centuries, it was the way life was.
But one day a clever engineer came along and said all this farmland could be “saved”, we could straighten the river and allow the floodwater to rush by the valley and everyone will benefit.
And so it happened. The straight river, clear of trees and shrubs where moorhens and coots had nests, were taken away and the water rushed away.
But not everyone was happy. Farmers further down the valley now had fields, that had never flooded before, under water. And houses that had never flooded now sat in the middle of huge winter lakes.
In Somerset the NT have taken a step back. Not only have they taken away the straightening of the watercourse, they had blocked the water course ands formed a new, permanent floodplain. An area that has become a marsh and home to water voles, kingfishers and the other animals I used to see before the river Culm was “tamed”.
