We’re here today as part of the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group and the Sidmouth Biodiversity Festival. We’re lucky to have so many people in Sidmouth involved in voluntary work. We’re raising awareness about the Sid catchment runoff,including issues like water retention, fish passage, and other water-related problems. We’re trying to gauge public opinion and gather ideas on how to improve the river, such as preventing road flooding.
We want to reduce peak flows and protect ecology and fish migration. We have several river-based activities planned. One involves riverfly monitoring, which helps us understand the river’s health. A variety of species indicates a healthy river.We’re also discussing the environmental impact of pets, particularly regarding parasite treatments. These drugs harm river invertebrates. We need to find better ways to use these treatments. We’re experimenting with different land cover types to see how they affect water runoff. We have hard surfaces, soil, and planted areas. We’ll simulate rainfall and observe how the water behaves.
