Celebrate National Meadows Day: Protecting Our Irreplaceable National Treasures
National Meadows Day, is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July (this year falling on 4 July). It is a vital call to action to appreciate and protect the UK’s disappearing wildflower meadows.
Meadows are not just beautiful landscapes; they are among our most biodiverse treasures, with some grasslands supporting more than 40 plant species in a single square metre . They are crucial for pollinators, help store carbon, mitigate flooding, and are deeply woven into our cultural heritage.
But they are in decline.
An alarming 97% of flower-rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s. This National Meadows Day, Plantlife is urging everyone to celebrate these spaces and take action. You can participate by sharing your favourite meadow images and stories on social media using #NationalMeadowsDay, or by writing to your local MP, to demand they protect these irreplaceable habitats and support the farmers and communities who care for them .
Meadows are a living, breathing part of our history—some, like Lugg Meadow in Herefordshire, are even recorded in the Domesday Book . By acting now, we can ensure these national treasures do not fade into memory.
