Method Statement: Planting a Hazel Hedgerow

1. Site Preparation

• Clear the Site: Remove any debris, weeds, and existing vegetation from the planting area.
• Prepare the Soil: Dig a trench approximately 30cm deep and 30cm wide. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the trench to improve drainage.
• OR Slit trench plant … the choice will depend on the plants being bare root or container grown/raised.
• Add Organic Matter: Incorporate well-rotted organic matter, such as compost or manure, into the soil to improve fertility and soil structure.

2. Planting the Hazel Whips

1. Select Healthy Whips: Choose hazel whips that are straight, sturdy, and free from disease or damage.
2. Soak the Whips: Soak the whips in water for a few hours before planting to hydrate them.
3. Plant at the Correct Depth: Plant the whips at a depth of approximately … see previous growing depth.
4. Space the Whips: Space the whips approximately 1 metre apart in the row with a double row approx 0.5m apart.
5. Backfill the Trench: Backfill the trench with soil, or heel in … firming gently around the base of the whips.
6. Water Thoroughly: Water the newly planted whips thoroughly to settle the soil and ensure good root contact.

3. Aftercare

• Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch, eg wood chips, around the base of the whips to conserve moisture and suppress weed growth.
• Watering: Water the whips regularly, especially during dry periods, to maintain soil moisture.
• Staking (Optional): If necessary, stake the whips to provide support and prevent them from being damaged by wind or animals.
• Pruning: Prune the whips to encourage branching and a dense hedge. This can be done in the winter months.

4. Maintenance

• Regular Watering: Continue to water the hedge during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting.
• Weed Control: Keep the area around the hedge weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
• Pruning: Prune the hedge regularly to maintain its shape and encourage new growth.
• Pest and Disease Control: Monitor the hedge for pests and diseases and take appropriate action if necessary.
