The Great UK WaterBlitz is a biannual campaign calling on volunteers to test the quality of their local freshwater including rivers, streams and lakes. This helps to build a national picture of water quality across the UK.
From Friday Sept 20th to Monday Sept 23rd 2024, thousands of people nationwide participated and sent their results electronically to Earth Watch. These are displayed on a map. One click on a flagged location brings up the data from that site.
Local volunteers monitored 17 sites in the Sid Valley and 2 in Salcombe Regis Valley. The results which are shown on the map and in the tables were generally good showing low nutrient levels. High nutrient levels were found in Bursombe Brook and Woolbrook at 3 of the 4 sites tested, Unwelcome algae can grow in the river when nutrient levels are high smothering our water plants and reducing water oxygen which fish and other water creatures need to breathe.
